Howlett Hall Rooftop Garden

When you think of rooftops, you probably envision gutters or shingles. But if you could get just one glimpse of Howlett Hall’s rooftop, your thoughts would change forever.

Workers installed a green roof on Howlett Hall in 2013, making it the first retrofitted green roof at Ohio State. The accessible green space spans some 12,000 square feet. The building itself is home to CFAES’s Department of Horticulture and Crop Science, Department of Food Science and Technology, and the Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens office.

The roof was planted with 7,000-plus perennials, including sedum, yarrow, blue fescue and others.
