The Rothenbuhler Honey Bee Research Laboratory is part of the Waterman Agricultural and Natural Resources Laboratory. The lab’s designer was Walter Rothenbuhler, who worked as an entomologist for Ohio State from the 1960s through the ’80s. The facility provides comprehensive research, teaching and outreach opportunities related to honey bees specifically and to entomology in general.
Undergraduate students who work in the lab gain a wide range of experience, from the practical matters of beekeeping all the way up to molecular research. The lab hosts a spring-semester beekeeping class in which student gets hands-on experience with the facility’s dozen bee hives.
